Three years ago, David defeated Goliath. In the 2010 regional final at the Fairgrounds Coliseum, Northland, the nation’s No. 1 team, led by Jared Sullinger and Trey Burke was dispatched 71-45 to an underdog Gahanna Lincoln squad in arguably the biggest upset in recent history. Northland vs. Canton Timken Preview

On Wednesday night, two of the 16 teams remaining in the state of Ohio will meet on the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum floor for a vital regional semifinal matchup. Northland, the No. 1 team in Division I comes into Wednesday’s game, winners of 26 straight, including a hard-fought victory over Olentangy Liberty, 52-48 on Saturday. Unlike some of the other dominant Northland teams before them, this year’s Viking squad has a knack to keep their composure in close games. As been the case all year long, the Northland Vikings (26-0) won yet another slugfest that went down to the wire, 52-48 over third-seeded Olentangy Liberty (24-2). Continue reading

Northland rolls over Hilliard Bradley behind strong second half

Ohio’s top team had many inside Northland’s gymnasium shaking their heads after the host Vikings went into halftime leading by only seven over lowly Hilliard Bradley (1-22, 0-13). Northland would rebound in the second half, fueled by a flurry of high power slams from Derek McKeithen in a 71-39 victory in the first round of tournament play. Continue reading

Northland wins seventh-straight City-League Championship, defeating Africentric 53-51

With just 51 seconds to go, and the game tied at 46, Africentric (19-3, 13-2) had the opportunity of a lifetime to put an end to Northland’s historic 103-game Columbus City-League winning streak. The Nubians held the ball and were ready to take the final shot before a packed house at East High School. As was the case for the majority of the afternoon, Africentric missed another opportunity, turning the ball over with ten seconds remaining. Northland (22-0, 15-0) would hit two free-throws following an Africentric foul, but the Nubians would tie the game at the buzzer, sending it into overtime. Continue reading
