Shaker Heights‘ sophomore big man Esa Ahmad has been making noise thus far in a successful 2012-’13 campaign for the Raiders. Drawing comparisons to Carlos Boozer, the six-foot-seven, 215 pound forward is one of the most talented players in a deep 2015 class in the state of Ohio.
As an intricate part to one of the top teams in the Northeast Ohio Conference, Ahmad has had a breakout season at just the right time for Shaker Heights. In a stacked conference including perennial powerhouses Cleveland Heights, Garfield Heights and Mentor, Ahmad has helped carry Shaker to a 16-6 record, including 8-2 in conference action.
Esa’s greatest performance this season came Feb. 19 against Cleveland power Villa Angela-St. Joseph, in which Ahmad went for 28 points and nine rebounds in a 68-66 win for Shaker. So far this season, Ahmad is averaging 20 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks per game, ridiculous numbers for a sophomore in one of Ohio’s top basketball conferences. Ahmad would once again prove himself two days later in a crucial road-win against rival Garfield Heights. Matched up against recent Ohio State commit Dave Bell, Ahmad held the six-foot-ten big man to six points, while going for 13 of his own in a 52-35 victory.
Ahmad’s ability to score from inside and out, along with his lengthy frame will make him a hot commodity for college coaches all across the country for the next few years. The sophomore has already received interest from Miami (FL), Ohio State, and many other D1 programs in an MVP season in the Northeast Ohio Conference. Keep an eye out for Esa Ahmad.
